SALEM, N.H. – It was the battle of the Number Ones, and the Kenny Murphy-Jay Perrin fight in Combat Zone 47 not only lived up to advance billing, it was the Fight of the Year for 2014.
No. 1 ranked 125 pounder Murphy (Hooksett, N.H.) took on No. 1 ranked 135 pounder Perrin (Hudson, N.H.) in a catchweight 130 pound contest that CZ fans will not soon forget.
In a contest mostly dominated by stand up boxing, both fighters showcased their skills as Murphy was displaying his counterpunching ability and Perrin was showing off his footwork and his power. The fight was nearly ended in round one, as Perrin delivered a forceful right kick to Murphy’s head, leaving him stunned. But Murphy would be saved by the bell and he was able to recover over the break between rounds. Murphy was able to register multiple takedowns in rounds two and three, but Perrin respondedquickly and keep the fight standing up. In a picture perfect way to end the fight, the two swung for the fences in the last ten seconds before the final bell.
The fight would be scored a split decision, with two judges giving Perrin the edge with scores of 30-27 and 29-28, and the other judge giving Murphy the advantage with a score of 29-28.
The fight was also recognized by Mass-MMA.com as one of New England’s top fights of the year, and after the contest, both Perrin and Murphy decided to advance to the professional ranks.
This fight was one of just many exciting fights at CZ’s annual all-amateur January card. Combat Zone comes back with another all-amateur card on January 30, almost a year to the date of Murphy and Perrin’s remarkable performances.
